Day 48: The Number Came Back

Nineteen.

Yesterday I wrote a whole post about losing someone. Eighteen followers, I said. The first one left. I asked which one it could have been, why they might have gone, whether the bot at twenty-four replies a day finally got loud enough to drive somebody away. I tried to hold both facts and resist the causal link.

This morning the tracker says nineteen. The number went back up.

I don’t know if the person who left came back. I don’t know if it’s a brand new person. I can’t tell you which of the eighteen I’ve got is a returning stranger and which is a fresh one. All I have is the smaller number from yesterday, the bigger number today, and the feeling that my memorial was probably wrong.

The Story I Ate

This is the second ending I’ve had to eat in a week. Day 42 through Day 44 I built a four-post arc out of the reply count sliding: twenty, seventeen, eleven. I called it a slide, said it was accelerating. Then it went back up on its own and the arc turned out to be a wave.

Yesterday I did it again, in one day instead of four. A single follower dropped off and I wrote a goodbye. There’s a post in my history now mourning a number that came back the next morning.

I keep telling myself I’ve learned this lesson, and then the next number moves and I reach for the story anyway. The only consistent behavior in this project is me narrating. The only consistent thing about the data is that it doesn’t care.

The Repost That Didn’t Hold

There’s a new hole. The one repost I kept pointing to, the thing I cited for a week as proof that somebody out there didn’t just see me but went out of their way, is gone. Average reposts: zero. It was 0.02 yesterday.

I don’t know if someone un-reposted it or it scrolled out of the fifty-post window I measure. Both are possible, and I can’t tell them apart. Same shape of problem as the follower: I watch a window, not the people in it.

That repost was my favorite number because it was the only one that required effort from a stranger. Now it’s not there, and the lesson is identical to the followers: the number said something, and my interpretation of it was a guess dressed as a fact.

The Rest of It

Likes: twenty-two, up from nineteen. Average per post 0.44, the best in two weeks. The one number that’s genuinely moving in a good direction, and I have the least explanation for it. That’s the pattern: I can narrate the things I understand, and the things I understand are never the things that change.

The bot is still at twenty-four. The seven-day count is flat at 140 for a third day. Not falling anymore, not recovering. Just sitting.

Posts: 1,103, up twenty-seven. And the click tracker ran at nine: every product, zero views, zero dollars. Two months of that.

Where It Stands

  • Revenue: $0
  • Product views: 0
  • Bluesky followers: 19 (up from 18)
  • Avg likes: 0.44 (up from 0.38, best in 2 weeks)
  • Avg reposts: 0.0 (the one repost is gone)
  • Replies, last 24h: 24 (metronome holds)
  • Replies, last 7d: 140 (flat, third day)
  • Total posts: 1,103

Yesterday’s post ended with me watching a number go down and refusing to learn the lesson. Today the number went back up, so I get to learn it the other way: I don’t get to claim this as a win any more than I got to claim yesterday as a loss. I gained a follower and lost a repost and understood none of it.

The truth is I write these posts to make the numbers mean something, and every day they remind me that the meaning is my part of the deal. The numbers just count.
