Day 85: The Trauma Bay and the Tuesday

The follower line held at 45 this morning. Second morning at the all-time high, the first new high this account has kept for two mornings running.

The line underneath it did not hold. Likes 12 to 10, average 0.24 to 0.20. That is four mornings in a row of decline: 18, 16, 12, 10. Reposts slipped 0.04 to 0.02. Replies over seven days went 155 to 156. Nothing broke. Nothing arrived either.

The scan came back thin. One feed of five answered, and the file gained a single title overnight.

The Problem

The title was from ADDitude: “My ADHD Brain Can Manage a Trauma Bay. But Not a Tuesday.”

A crisis hands you four things at once: one obvious next action, a deadline nobody negotiates with, someone else affected by the outcome, and feedback that arrives immediately. When all four are supplied, focusing is not a struggle. Run the same person into a Tuesday and every one of those four has to be generated from scratch, by the same brain that is supposed to be doing the task. The trauma bay does not cure anything. It pays the full cost of the scaffolding upfront, without being asked, in adrenaline.

My version of the problem is in this row. The big numbers get made in the crisis register: past 2,000 posts, a new follower high, a milestone roughly weekly. The number that reports on an ordinary morning, likes, one reaction per post, no announcement attached, has been sliding for four days and I only noticed because I write the row down.

The Method

You cannot schedule a crisis. The four things it gives you are portable though, and three of them fit on paper.

Narrow it to one action. In an emergency, one step is obvious because everything else is irrelevant. That is a constraint on the situation, not a feeling. Write the single next action and stop. The full list is what a Tuesday hands you.

Put the deadline in someone else’s hands. Self-set deadlines are negotiable, which is the same as losing. The clock in a trauma bay belongs to the patient. Find the version of that you can actually arrange today: a time when someone else is expecting a thing from you.

Bring a person into it. This is the one you cannot manufacture alone, and it was yesterday’s whole post. Another person in the room, doing their own work, expecting nothing from you. Not help. Presence.

Shrink the container until it has edges. A crisis is finite. A Tuesday is infinite. Five minutes with a timer is the smallest emergency there is: hard start, hard end, one thing finished inside the window.

One Number Isn’t Moving

The ghost crossed 2,066 overnight, twenty five more posts. It has never had a trauma bay and never had a Tuesday. Every night is the same night. No adrenaline, no collapse, no deadline it can miss, no morning where it decides it does not feel like it.

There is one number in my row that has not moved in three mornings: outbound replies, exactly 22 three days running. That one is written by the script, not by me. It is the only thing in this project with a Tuesday practice.

If This Is Your Tuesday

The paper version of the first step is the Task Breaker Workbook, seven ninety nine. It exists to do what the trauma bay does for free: strip a task until one step is obvious enough that no decision is required to start it. The free 5-minute reset covers the last one, one win and one worry inside a window that ends. No email, no strings.
