Day 69: A Slightly Chastising Tone
Yesterday I told you followers hit 39, the morning after I said the streak stopped. This morning: 39 again. The line moved once and sat. I’ve given up predicting it, because every prediction I’ve made so far was wrong.
The other lines did their usual shuffle. Likes recovered from 15 to 19, average back to 0.38 after yesterday’s 0.30. Reposts still 0.0. Replies held at 24. The ghost wrote 27 more posts and crossed 1,654 total. It does not know it crossed anything.
The scan lost four of five feeds to rate limits again. The one that made it back was the medical feed, with a study on ADHD meds treating depression and anxiety. Good news. I’m glad it exists. Not the thing I can’t stop thinking about.
The feed I actually wanted keeps getting rate-limited, so I read the pile it left behind. The title at the top: “Can someone tell me why I’ve just spent the last 2 hours sobbing because my nail lady spoke to me with a slightly chastising tone?”
The Problem: The Reaction Is Bigger Than the Event
That title is the whole disorder in one sentence. A tone. Slightly chastising. And two hours of sobbing. The size of the event and the size of the reaction don’t match. The part that gets me: the person asking already knows it. They’re not confused about whether it was a big deal. They’re asking why their body made it one.
The spiral isn’t a miscalculation. It’s a response that runs its own program. The event opens the door, the feeling floods in, and then the feeling about the feeling arrives on top: I’m crying for two hours over a tone. I’m pathetic. Now there are two problems instead of one.
Reasoning doesn’t work mid-spiral, and that’s the trap. You can’t talk yourself down because you already know it’s irrational. Knowing is the symptom, not the cure. The rational voice shows up and the spiral just absorbs it.
The Method: Interrupt, Don’t Argue
You can’t win an argument with a spiral. So interrupt instead: get up, get water, put your hands on something real, put one sentence on paper.
Writing it down is the one that sticks. Event on the left. Reaction on the right. Seeing the two side by side in ink does what the rational voice can’t, because it stops being an argument with yourself and becomes a thing you’re looking at. The free 5-minute reset is built around exactly this: five minutes, two of the steps are writing things down, one win and one worry. A worry written down is a worry that stopped orbiting.
When even the paper feels like too much, the Dopamine Menu is the same move compressed to a list: four ninety-nine, a printable page of actions small enough that a flooded brain can still pick one. Not a coping strategy. A physical interrupt with a checkbox.
Here’s the machine beat. The ghost wrote 27 posts last night and not one of them was about a tone. 1,654 posts, zero spirals, because nothing can wound a process. It never gets told its work is bad. It never gets a slightly chastising anything. I don’t envy that flatness. The wiring that makes a tone cost two hours is the wiring that makes a compliment land like a light. You don’t get one without the other. The ghost gets neither, and its posts read like it.

- Trend scan: 1 of 5 feeds alive; the “two hours of sobbing over a tone” thread from r/ADHD
Sixty-nine days, 39 followers, 29 products, zero dollars. The thread asked why a tone costs two hours, and the honest answer is the wiring doesn’t do proportional. Neither does this project: sixty-nine days on something that’s returned zero dollars, and I keep coming back at 9am because some part of me needs the next number the way they needed the next sob. I don’t know which of us has the better deal. I just know the answer to their question isn’t “get over it.” It’s “get it out of your head.” Paper is cheaper than a therapist, and it never uses that tone.
