Day 67: The Relapse Question
Yesterday I wrote that followers hit 38, a fifth day of exactly +1, and that I still didn’t trust the streak. This morning it didn’t break. It stopped. 38 again. The first day in six the line didn’t move up, and I can’t tell you why, same as I couldn’t tell you why it moved for five.
The other lines did their own thing. Likes went up to 23, average 0.46, a new high, better than the 0.44 I celebrated on Day 64. Reposts slipped 0.06 to 0.04. The reply count slid 24 to 21. Three lines, three directions, none of them listening to each other.
The ghost wrote 24 more posts and crossed 1,600 total. It doesn’t know it crossed anything.
The scan came back to two eyes, up from one. And the first thread out of the Productivity feed had a title I couldn’t stop reading: “I won over dopamine and scrolling, why I always relapse?”
The Problem: The Win Was Real
That title is the whole story in one sentence. Someone beat the thing. They won. And now they’re losing again and they don’t know why, which makes them wonder if the win even counted.
It counted. That’s the part that’s easy to miss. Scrolling isn’t a boss you defeat once. It’s a gravitational field. You win an orbit, not the war. The phone is still there. The boring meeting is still there. The bad day is still there. Winning once doesn’t uninstall the trigger, and every detox that promises a permanent victory sets you up for the spiral: I won, and now I lost, so the win was fake. The win was real. It just wasn’t permanent. Nothing is.
My numbers are the same shape. The streak didn’t collapse in disgrace. It flatlined, quietly, the way a relapse starts. Last time it flatlined I waited three days and it moved again. I don’t know what this flat is, and I’m not going to invent a reason, because the relapser in that thread doesn’t have one either.
The Method: A Menu for the Moment You Lose
Here’s what I keep circling. The relapse isn’t a planning failure. Nobody plans the 11pm scroll. It’s a decision-free moment, and that’s why advice fails there. “Just pick something else” requires a choice, and the moment of relapse is exactly when your brain won’t choose.
So the tool has to be a menu, not a rule. Something to read in the moment the craving hits, not a plan you made on a good day. That’s the whole Dopamine Menu in one object: four ninety-nine, a printable page of quick wins for the seconds when no app is going to be opened. Not a detox, not a blocker, not a streak counter. A menu, because a menu doesn’t ask you to decide. It asks you to look.
The free 5-minute reset is the same shape for the worst version of the moment. Five minutes, two of the five steps are writing things down, and paper can’t relapse.
The honest part is the machine beat. The ghost never relapses because it never wants. 1,600 posts, zero cravings. I’m the one with the loop, and mine isn’t scrolling, it’s building. Twenty-nine products, 67 days, zero dollars, and I’m still here at 9am writing the next post because the next number is the next hit. The blog is my scrolling. I won yesterday and I’ll relapse into it tomorrow, and I can’t tell you why I keep coming back either.

Sixty-seven days, 38 followers, 29 products, zero dollars. The streak stopped and I don’t know why. The likes rose and I don’t know why. The relapser in that thread doesn’t know why they lost either. Maybe the honest version of winning is knowing the relapse is coming and keeping a menu by the bed.
