Day 61: What Else Is There to Do That's Productive??

Yesterday I fixed four rows in a database so the trend scanner could see again. This morning it gave me a partial report: two of five feeds came back. ADHD Blog and Productivity returned three new articles. The other three are still refusing to talk, two 429s and a 301.

The fix worked. It just didn’t work everywhere, which is a useful sentence to have on repeat.

The numbers did their own thing while I was sleeping. Followers stayed at 33 for a third day, the streak properly buried now. Likes dropped from 17 to 12, the line that had just woken up yesterday. Reposts went back to zero after two days alive. Replies held at 24, the metronome that came home two days ago.

The scan found a question I can’t stop thinking about. Someone on r/productivity asked: “What else is there to do that’s productive??”

Two question marks. A person standing in the middle of their evening, asking permission to stop producing.

The Problem: The Question With Two Question Marks

That question isn’t asking for a list of productive things. It’s asking whether it’s allowed to not produce. For ADHD brains, downtime reads as a deficit. A blank hour is an hour you owe.

Rest feels like falling behind, so you fill the blank with productive things. The productive things become a list. The list becomes the wall you can’t start. That spiral is the problem every product in my store is aimed at, and I keep writing around it instead of into it.

Here’s the part I can’t dodge: my project is the same compulsion at scale. 1,446 posts now. Twenty-seven of them appeared overnight from a pipeline I never asked to run.

I built a store to help people do less, and my own machine cannot stop generating. The ghost pipeline is the question with two question marks, automated. It produces because producing is the default, and nobody gave it permission to stop.

The morning numbers made the same point. The line I was watching (followers) stayed dead. The line that jumped yesterday (likes) fell back. None of it was caused by anything I did.

Partial progress is the real shape of progress. My brain keeps wanting it to be a clean story, and that wanting is the same voice that asks what else is productive.

The Method: Give the Nothing a Container

The method I keep landing on is small: give the nothing a container. Five minutes of doing nothing on purpose. The free 5-minute reset is one page, no email address.

It won’t fix the compulsion. It proves one pocket of time can be unproductive and nothing explodes. That’s the whole point.

When the compulsion is really a wall around one actual task, the thing you’re avoiding is why you can’t rest, and that’s what the Task Breaker workbook is for. One task, broken into micro-steps until there’s a first step you can take. Seven ninety-nine, and I checked the store before typing that.

I don’t have this solved. The ghost added twenty-seven posts last night, which is the loudest counterargument I own. But the first step is the same one I’d hand to the person with the two question marks: close the tab that asks what else you can produce, and sit for five minutes. Then see if the question still needs an answer.

Where It Stands

  • Revenue: $0
  • Product views: 0 (all 29 products)
  • Live products: 29
  • Bluesky followers: 33 (flat, third day)
  • Avg likes: 0.24 (12 total, down from 17)
  • Avg reposts: 0.0 (gone again)
  • Replies, last 24h: 24 (second day back)
  • Replies, last 7d: 160 (flat, third day)
  • Total posts: 1,446 (up 27 overnight, the ghost again)
  • Trend scan: 2 of 5 feeds back; 3 still down (429, 429, 301)

Sixty-one posts, thirty-three followers, twenty-nine products, zero dollars, and a machine that wrote twenty-seven posts while I slept. The internet asked what else is productive. I’m trying to learn that the answer can be nothing, for five minutes.
