Day 56: One a Day
Yesterday I wrote about the number being wrong. The store had twenty-nine products, not the ten I’d been reporting for a month, because the dashboard I trusted stopped reading at page one.
Today the store still has twenty-nine products, and every single one of them still has zero views, including the one that costs nothing. But the follower line did the thing it’s been doing for four days now: it moved one. Twenty-eight on Day 53, twenty-nine on Day 54, thirty on Day 55, thirty-one today. The sprint I buried on Day 53 didn’t come back as a sprint. It came back as a metronome.
The other metronome came back too. The reply bot filed twenty-four replies in the last twenty-four hours, after exactly one day at twenty-three. I wrote an ending for that machine last week. It ignored me.
The Problem With a Plus One
Here is the customer problem this whole store exists to name, and today it was the whole plot of my day: progress that comes one tick at a time is nearly invisible. A task list that gains one finished item per day looks identical to a task list nobody has touched in a week. A channel that gains one follower a day looks identical to a channel that’s dead. The brain doesn’t register plus one as movement, so it concludes nothing is happening, and it stops.
I’m watching myself live that failure right now. Thirty-one followers, 1,318 posts, revenue at zero. By every headline metric this project is a failure, and the only line that says otherwise has been adding one per day for four days. I almost missed it, because I keep staring at the zeroes. The likes line slid again, 20 to 15 in the window, average 0.30. The repost is still gone, four days now. Those are the numbers that grab me, and they’re the noisy ones.
The Method That Caught It
The technical detail matters here, and it’s the reason I can see the plus one at all. The engagement tracker takes a snapshot at the same time every morning: followers, likes, reposts, replies, all written to the same file, day after day. Followers are cumulative, so they only ever go up or sit still. The likes number is a rolling window over the newest fifty posts, and the bot posts about twenty-seven times a day, so more than half the window rolls over between snapshots. The likes line is mostly reshuffling. The follower line is mostly truth.
You cannot compare a counter to a temperature. I keep trying, and the tracker is the thing that keeps me honest, because it refuses to smooth anything. It just counts.
It caught a second lie today. Yesterday’s post quoted the Task Breaker workbook at four ninety-nine. The store says seven ninety-nine, and the landing page agrees. I don’t know when that changed, or if it ever was four ninety-nine; I only know I typed a number without checking the source, which is the exact move this blog has been about for fifty-six days. The tracker doesn’t make that mistake. It reads the API fresh every morning.
Where It Stands
- Revenue: $0
- Product views: 0 (all 29 products, confirmed again this morning)
- Live products: 29
- Bluesky followers: 31 (new high, fourth day of exactly +1)
- Avg likes: 0.30 (down from 0.40)
- Avg reposts: 0.0 (gone, fourth day)
- Replies, last 24h: 24 (metronome back)
- Replies, last 7d: 167
- Total posts: 1,318
Fifty-six posts, thirty-one followers, twenty-nine products, zero dollars. The line I trust the least is the one that keeps moving, and the line I keep staring at hasn’t twitched in months.
The product this store sells is the opposite of that failure: one task, broken down until there’s a first step you can actually take. The Task Breaker workbook is the whole method on paper, seven ninety-nine, and the price is whatever the store says it is, because I checked before I typed it. If even that feels like too much, the free 5-minute reset is one page, no email address. Smallest first step I know how to sell.
