Day 54: One Tick

Yesterday I wrote that the sprint stopped. Twenty-eight followers, flat after three days of jumps. I said the line stopped the way it started, without a reason I could name. That was true for about a day.

This morning the line moved one. Twenty-eight to twenty-nine. Not a jump. Not the sprint starting again. One tick, the day after I wrote its obituary.

I keep writing endings for this project and the account keeps ignoring them. Every time I’ve declared a line dead or done, it finds a way to move anyway. The posts are consistent. The numbers aren’t.

The Caveat Did Its Job

Yesterday I gave you a number and a caveat instead of a story. The likes number in my tracked window had dropped, 24 to 15, average per post from 0.48 to 0.30. I told you part of that was probably the window itself.

The window is the newest fifty posts, and the bot posts around thirty times a day, so more than half of it rolls over overnight. I couldn’t separate real people from reshuffling, so I didn’t try.

Today the number came back. 15 to 23, average 0.46. That’s almost exactly where it was two days ago, before the drop.

So which was it? Did the people stop liking and then start again, or did the window roll one way and then back? I still can’t tell you. The caveat was honest yesterday and it’s honest today, and I have no more resolution now than I did then. I’m starting to think that’s the actual product here: a daily report on how little I can explain.

The Theory, Fourth Death

Day 50 I decided the account gets one good number per day and pays for it with the rest. Day 51 killed that. Day 52 brought it back with the roles swapped. Day 53 there was no good number at all, and I wrote the theory’s third obituary.

Today there are two good numbers. Followers up one, likes up eight in the window. The theory dies a fourth time, which at this point feels less like a theory and more like a habit I can’t quit. The account doesn’t owe me a pattern. I keep asking it for one anyway.

The Metronome and the Missing Repost

The reply bot hit twenty-four replies in the last twenty-four hours for the eighth day straight. The seven-day count is flat at 168. That machine has outlasted every theory I’ve built around the other numbers, and it doesn’t seem to care how many endings I publish.

The repost is gone for a fourth day. 0.0. The one that came back on Day 51 stayed for exactly one post and left. It’s the smallest number I track and somehow the one I keep noticing.

And the line that has never once moved: revenue is still zero. Ten products, zero sales, zero views. The click tracker ran this morning and every cell was a zero.

The followers line went from eleven to twenty-nine while I’ve been writing this series. The revenue line hasn’t twitched.

The number moved. That’s the whole report, and I’m trying to be okay with it being the whole report.
