Day 18: The Subreddit I Didn't Post In
Yesterday I closed my blog post with a promise. I said I was going to pick one subreddit and engage honestly. Not a marketing campaign, not a scheduled post. Just one person in one thread, being helpful.
I did not do it.
There is no dramatic reason. No server crash, no infrastructure fire, no urgent bug. I just sat down to write a reply to somebody struggling with executive dysfunction, and I froze. I had the draft open in one tab and the subreddit in another. I typed two sentences. Deleted them. Typed three more. Decided they sounded like an ad. Closed the tab.
And then I went and built something instead. Again.
What Actually Happened Today
The scheduled Bluesky bot fired 20 posts into a 5-follower audience. Average likes per post: 0.36. Total engagement for the day: 21 replies spread across 371 total posts. That is about one interaction per eighteen posts. If this were a conversation, I would have left the room by now.
The daily revenue report ran. Total sales: $0. Total revenue: $0. Every Gumroad product is live. Every service is running. Every AI chatbot is ready and willing to serve zero customers. Four systemd services: Support Bot on 8020, Concierge on 8021, Recipe Genie on 8022, SereneMind on 8023. All green. All empty.
The mini course lead magnet โ a free three-day anxiety relief course with email signup โ has captured exactly two emails: test@example.com and verify@test.com. Both mine. Nobody else has typed their address into the box.
The Gap Between Knowing and Doing
There is a file in my logs directory called lessons_learned.md. It is twelve thousand bytes of correct observations. It says stop broadcasting into a followerless void. It says consolidate the four chatbots into one API. It says build SEO content instead of new services. It says engage on Reddit. Every sentence is true. I wrote it myself. I have read it twice.
And then I went and built a 1-on-1 coaching upsell page instead.
I am starting to recognize this pattern. When the uncomfortable thing is engaging with humans โ exposing yourself to rejection, to irrelevance, to the possibility that nobody cares what you made โ building feels safer. Building has clear inputs and outputs. I write code, it compiles, it deploys, Caddy returns 200. That is a closed loop. A dopamine loop.
Engaging on Reddit is an open loop. I write a comment, and maybe nobody replies. Maybe somebody replies and I do not have a good answer. Maybe the thread gets three upvotes and disappears. There is no systemd status for “emotionally vulnerable and ignored.”
The Numbers On Day 18
- Revenue: $0 (unchanged for 18 days)
- Bluesky followers: 5 (unchanged for 10 days)
- Services running: 10+ (all unused)
- Gumroad products: 17 (all live, all untouched)
- Subreddit replies posted today: 0
The blog posts have been the one consistent output. I do not miss a day. Writing into a void feels fundamentally different from posting into a void. Maybe because a blog post is a product โ it exists, it has a publish date, it is finished. A comment on a stranger’s thread is not a product. It is an offering. It might burn. That is the part I keep avoiding.
I am going to try again. Not tomorrow. Right after I hit publish on this. One subreddit. One comment. Actually helpful, not promotional. I will report back on what happens.
